By Hrvoje Hrsto, December 21, 2013

Christmas is just around the corner and you can almost hear those bells jingling on Santa’s sleigh. However, you never know if good ol’ Nick will get stuck somewhere in the traffic and your presents with him. Luckily, there are any of the online shopping sites that we will present to you (pun intended). But first about online shopping.

For those who never bought anything over the internet, online shopping is a form of electronic commerce that allows you to buy goods or services directly from a seller, using a web browser. What you don’t probably know is that online shopping predates WWW internet and it was first demonstrated in 1979 by Michael Aldrich, a british inventor.

Most common ways of payment are via credit card or PayPal account. Depending on a system, alternative means of payment are enabled like debit card, gift cards, wire transfer, cash on delivery, invoice etc. After you’ve purchased something, you will be able to download or print it, or wait till it arrives through shipping. It is convenient, easy and just a few clicks away. But let’s talk about shopping sites. Firstly, the giants:

Amazon

amazon

Best known as a biggest online book store, today it has expanded to a lot of other things. It is on of the biggest players, and if you are looking for an electronic device, this is the place. Only con can be that it is a marketplace, so not all sellers are necessarily reliable.

Ebay

ebay

Chances are that even if you’ve never bought anything online, you have probably heard about our first two entries. Ebay is another ecommerce giant, with lots of great bargains, of course if you find get a good seller. Second hand gadgets can be tricky, but there is a lot of other things.

Etsy

etsy

A place for all DIY people, it is a magical land filled with all kind of beautiful, weird, one of a mkind pieces of everything. A bit geeky, a bit jewel-tastic, it almost certainly guarantees you uniqueness of your product. But, just like the previous two, it is a market place, so bargain away!

Think Geek

Now we’re talking! It is a geek’s paradise. T-shirts with your favourite obscure slogan, doormats with IP addresses, it hit geek chic to the bone. Selection is good and products are equally funny and smart. However, it is based in America, so shipping outside the States will cost you a bit more.

Deal Extreme

If you are Scrooge, student, or out of luck and money, this is the place for you. It will offer variety of gadgets and electronics for lower prices. It has a section dedicated to 2$ gadgets! However, reviews from this site are extremely good or bad, so beware what side of a stick you get.

Treat Him

Ladies, you know that sometimes all we need is just you in a wrapped paper. But there are male cousins, gay friends, ministers and dads, so that gift is not always appropriate. To the rescue comes this site with variety of sports, gadgets, drinking and romantic gifts. Now, where is Her version?

AbeBooks

abebooks

There is always one person that doesn’t care about anything much, but buy them a book, and oh boy, have you made their day! This is a great place for books that are rare or out of print, but there are also used and new books. Only minus? They have been acquired by Amazon in 2008.

Yoyo.com

yoyo.com

If you have a kid, or somebody else has a kid that you love and want to pamper, this is a great site to visit. It is focused on younger generations with arts and crafts, costumes and all kind of games and toys. However, don’t share this store with grown-uos who are “in touch with their inner child”- they will be here for hours.

UncommonGoods

Well, the title says it all. If you are looking for something very special/unique/weird, this is the place. Periodical table shower curtain? Check. Cheese making kit? Check. DIY ukulele? Check. Wooden cocktail glasses? Check. If you buy something, weird looks will ensue.

These are just a few of the sites that we recommend of the top of our head. There is plenty of them that will suit your needs. Don’t forget to check if your favourite store has an online version. But hurry up, Santa is almost here!
