Oust.Me is “Risk” for Foursquare: Let Your Check-Ins Make You The King

3 min read,

Your life should be a game – it’s the tagline of Oust.me, a geo location game from Slovenia, Europe. Here’s what it’s all about – when you check in to Foursquare venues (or Facebook Places) you get some Foursquare points, you unlock badges and win mayorships, right? Except for the comments and tips, that’s the most interaction you’ll have with other users. And where’s the fun when only two people are fighting over a mayorship?

Oust.me enables you to conquer whole territories, dominate other ones and truly rule your city – at least in a virtual world. Think of it as a game of Risk, in which you use Foursquare to hold yours and conquer other territories.

How Does Oust.Me Work?

To start with Oust.me, you’ll have to sign up with your Foursquare or Facebook credentials. This way, Oust.me will get all of your check-ins and draw your territories on the map. Now is the right time to ask – what is a territory in Oust.me?

In order for you to own (or create) a territory, there are some rules you need to know:

  • A territory is an area that consists of at least three venues in which you have to be the Ouster;
  • The distance between those venues must me under 2 kilometers;
  • Between those three venues there shouldn’t be any other Ousters except for you.

Once you start ousting, if you’re a regular Foursquare or Facebook Places user, you’ll probably already have some own territories, so you’ll get the picture of the places where you’re the boss.

Are You An Ouster?

To own a venue in Oust.me, you’ll have to be the Ouster. It’s something similar to Foursquare’s mayorship, but it’s not strongly related; if you’re a mayor of a venue, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re the Ouster, as the Ouster is calculated with a special algorithm where the number of check-ins over time are a big parameter.

So, now that you know the basics, go and take a look at the map – locate yourself and your territories. Take a look at other territories around you and plan your move. To get into other territories you need to find some venues where you can check in frequently so you can become the Ouster. If the venue is close to your territory (closer than 2 kilometers), once you become the Ouster, the venue will be added to your territory and the area of your virtual kingdom will grow.

If the venues are too far away from your territory, the new one will be created. This is the fun part of the Oust.me; it’s up to you to decide whether you’ll build one large territory or several smaller. After all, Oust.me is the Risk of location services, so you’re the chief strategist 😉
